The bee and the monkey!

Since The Beezhouse is just starting out I thought it would be great to start with some education about bees (and monkeys).
I recently read an article about how smart bees really are (why I read this - not really sure. Anyway, think it had something to do with finding similarities between bees and monkeys.)
Anyway in this study they found that although bees do actually have a really small brain (yes, they really do!), in some instances their brain is as effective as that of a monkey, in things such as working memory! Wow, did you know that?
Anyway what this means, is that although pretty “brainless” they have a pretty decent short-term memory.
What else I discovered is:
- That there are some 20.000 different species found on all continents except Antartica.
- Bees figure more prominently in myth than any other insect.
- Bee stings have also been reputed to help alleviate the associated symptoms of Multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases.
- Bees are capable of perceiving the polarization of light. They use this information to orient their communicative dances.
- The smallest bee is a dwarf bee (Trigona minima) and it is about 2.1 mm long, whilst the largest bee in the world is the Megachile pluto, which can be as large as 39 mm.

How interesting Monkeyboy! As Crohn’s Disease is an auto immune disease I am taking this oppurtunity to express my desire to be stung in hopes of alleviating my symptoms! Sting away my fellow bees…cure us all!
Doin’ it for the Crohnnies……

Jade, your best bet is simply going to a beefarm and putting your arm in a BEEZnest. That will surely get you a few BEEZtings.
