MART 130

November
I always like to tell a little story before a discussion. The story usually involves me and I feel it adds that personal touch. Today’s review is all about the other side. No, this isn’t a brokeback moment. I’m talking the other side of the city. I don’t cross the river too often, partly because I’m a little lazy but mainly because there’s a different mindset one requires when venturing south of the CBD. I find St Kilda et al a little fake, both in attitude and appearance. Both in the people and in the places. The suburbs just don’t have that comfy-italian-driving-shoes feel that I get in Carlton, Brunswick, Fitzroy… the right side of the river. Maybe there just aren’t enough wogs on the streets?
MART 130
107a Canterbury Rd, Middle Park
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I drove down to Middle Park today. I was in unfamiliar territory (read: wrong side of the river) heading to a place which sounded bizarre when described to me (converted tram station). We have tram stops in Brunswick, but not stations. It could have sounded completely ridiculous except for the fact I’d heard the same story from several people. Things become less ridiculous upon multiple tellings. Sure enough, when I parked my gleaming car in Canterbury rd (washed especially for the river crossing so I’d fit in), there was the café, exactly as everyone had described it.
